Ahead of their Spacestation debut on 18th July at Village Underground for our Lovebox Afterdark show we catch up with PBR Streetgang. They join Soul Clap, Horse Meat Disco and Peak & Swift so for those that are more adventurous there is definitely a party beyond the park. The duo promise to bring their cosmic vibes to the turntables and hear is what they had to say:
Can you tell us a bit about your story so far? How did you guys get into music?
Bonar: I guess like a lot of people like us really, just started out collecting records about 18 years ago , that turned into Djing and then that turned into buying a sampler and so on .. all a bit of a natural progression if you are completely obsessed with music.
Tom: Our parents are all hippies, into obscure folk and psychedelic rock music, they experimented with hallucinogenics, hanging around similar like minded people of the 60's & 70's. We were constantly involved with music gatherings, free love and a 'vibe' mentality. Growing up in a commune that way of life was part of our up bringing, we quickly got a thirst for the music and regularly visited the early illegal warehouse raves. As soon as we knew what a pair of turntables were, we were trying to mix - I guess things quickly snow balled from there!
What do you like to do when you guys aren’t in the studio/club?
Bonar: Free Climbing, cliff diving, wrestling bears .. that kinda thing ... We're pretty boring to be honest, studios & clubs that takes up nearly all of our time, record shopping and listening to new bits you can add to that.. walking the dog .. thats one thing we both like doing !
Tom: Drink tea and walk our dog(s)!
So you guys spend a lot of time together, who wears the trousers?
Bonar: Trousers ... We're more speedos and thongs round here ...
Tom: No one really, we're like brothers - no 'power trip' in our family. Obviously we both have our own opinions, but problems between us are few and far between and nothing a large whisky can't sort out!
You have a busy summer ahead, can you tell us what is your favourite festival?
Bonar: I don't think we could single out one really but there are so many good ones coming up - Gottwood, Hideout, The Garden Festival all coming up next but really cannot wait for Lovebox festival in London on the 17th-18th July, that is gonna be huge.
Tom: Can we not narrow it down to one… please! Our favourites right now are… The Garden in Croatia, Gottwood, Festival No.6, Glasto, and of course Lovebox.
Do you have any collaborations in the pipe line?
Tom: We do have few releases coming up this summer - next is our EP on Toy Tonics on the 15th of June, then a single for SUOL on the 26th and in July an EP for 2020Vision. As far as collabs we've got a great single coming out with Waifs & Strays on Dirt Crew Recordings later this year so look out for that.
Bonar: Hmm, we've just done something with XPress 2 and Waifs & Strays, both were a lot of fun. And we're constantly talking to Sam (Maxxi Sound System) about doing something together, but finding time is proving difficult.
Finally, what is your favourite disco banger?
Aahh thats a toughy ! dont think we could name one favourite, it changes all the time.. but one that did the biz for us on a boat party in Amsterdam last month was this ...
